In 2002, Just Us Girls started a scholarship program to provide scholarship funds to college-age students in Monmouth and Ocean County who have been impacted by breast cancer.
Students from high schools in Monmouth and Ocean county are eligible to participate in the scholarship program by submitting an essay about how breast cancer affected their lives.
Our 2011 scholarship recipients were Alicia Morris from Manasquan High School and Adriana Kern from Point Pleasant Boro High School.
Alicia chose to write about her grandmother and then a dear friend who also had breast cancer. Although she didn't know her grandmother, her mom kept her memory alive. Her friend was someone she spent years with after school and during the summer months. Both of these women had a strong impact on our recipient's life.
Adriana wrote about her grandmother's struggle with breast cancer and the brave fight she fought. Her grandmother had her first mammogram at the age of 62 when her breast cancer was discovered requiring a double radical mastectomy. This is a strong message for ALL women.
Our 2010 scholarship recipients were Kaitlyn Maltese from Howell High School and Nicole Casey from Point Pleasant Boro High School.
Kaitlyn wrote of the devastating effects cancer had on her family, having lost two grandparents to cancer and then having her beloved aunt, who was both friend and math teacher battle breast cancer. She spoke of her aunt's courageous fight and unending willingness to help others, tutoring when she could no longer work due to fatigue. Kaitlyn participated in local walks and races which benefitted cancer organizations.
Nicole Casey wrote of her mother's struggle with breast cancer detailing the events of the personal effects it had on her mom, herself and her brother. She revaluated her life, learned what is important and became closer to her mother and brother as they pulled together to overcome this tragedy.
